Combinatorial design theory is the subfield of combinatorics that deals with the existence, construction, and properties of systems of finite sets whose arrangement satisfy certain balance and symmetry. Magic square and completed sudoku tables are two well-known examples of combinatorial designs.
Researchers in this filed rely on their creativity and imagination to discover new mathematical structures, frequently with the help of powerful computers. Sophisticated combinatorial algorithms are used to enumerate all different structures of a particular type.
Combinatorial design theory continues to develop as a subfield that is at once pure mathematics, applicable mathematics, and applied mathematics. Indeed, modern application include finite geometry, tournament scheduling, lotteries, mathematical chemistry, algorithm design and analysis, network topology, and cryptography.
